2018 NAIRO NAVIGATING THE CHANGES IN HEALTHCARE

Each year, NAIRO and its member companies stage an annual Symposium discussing the latest developments and trends in independent medical review. The Symposium delivers in-depth educational content, along with networking opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with others in the industry.

 

For 2018, the Symposium moves to beautiful San Diego, California the week of October 16th. The theme for the three-day event is “Navigating the Changes in Healthcare,” highlighting changes in compliance, regulatory, and other requirements to support IROs and Utilization Review Organizations navigate the dynamic and ever evolving healthcare landscape.

Donna Merrick

Donna Merrick, MEd, BSN, Product Enhancement Principal, has been with URAC for more than 19 years. She served as an accreditation reviewer at URAC for nearly nine years, became director of URAC’s health plan accreditation, and then product enhancement principal. Working with advisory groups of volunteers representing healthcare stakeholders, Donna facilitates the revision of standards for accreditation and certification programs. She has a Masters in Education from Pepperdine University (CA) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland. Before joining URAC, Donna was a clinical nurse in the U.S. Navy and in civilian healthcare settings. Donna enjoys fresh herbs from her garden and outdoor activities while vacationing in Maine.

Nancy Clay

Nancy Clay, Senior Vice President of Business Operations, joined Specialized Security Services, Inc. in 2011 and honed her skills working in various operational roles over the past decade. With a solid belief that client relations and customer service are key to successful long-term business relationships, Nancy works closely with current and new clients, integrating them into ongoing cybersecurity programs and initiatives.

Nancy has assisted many clients develop strategies that assist in identifying and mitigating cyber risks and vulnerabilities within all business sectors including government, healthcare, retail, food and beverage, travel and hospitality, insurance and financial sector’s. Her unique background and perspective helps her partner with clients to identify their security needs and implement both short and long-term solutions.

Nancy has natural people skills, she is a natural leader whom is extroverted and outgoing. She is also very generous, understanding and respected by both her peers, clients and associates. She is quick to connect with others. She is excellent at directing her team in successful projects.

Elise Klein

Elise Klein is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Lewis Brisbois and Chair of the Life Health Disability & ERISA Practice. She has more than twenty years of experience in insurance and health insurance law. Ms. Klein was part of the defense team on the closely followed and highly anticipated King Case recently decided by the California Supreme Court. Ms. Klein will discuss the ramifications of the King Case and similar decisions from the vantage point of accredited review entities, including IROs, HUMs, and WCUMs. Elise’s exciting presentation includes dialogue on the following cases:

Dr. Kenneth Smith
Dr. Kenneth E. Smith, MD, MBA serves as Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Services of Inter Valley Health Plan Inc. Dr. Smith has an extensive background in administrative health care delivery systems and has been a featured speaker in the areas of international health care, worker’s compensation and utilization management. Dr. Smith served as the Executive Vice President for FHP Life Insurance Company, a subsidiary of FHP International, Inc., successively PacifiCare Health Services and United Health Care of Southern California. He served as CMO or Senior Medical Director for both Medi-Cal and Medicare managed care corporations, including Molina Health Care and Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP). He served as the Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Smith is board certified in internal medicine. He received his training at the University of Minnesota and The Medical College of Wisconsin.

Tom Sipes

Tom Sipes, Director of Security Services at Specialized Security Services, has over 29 years in Information Security Compliance and Technology consulting in the retail, government, financial and healthcare industries. He is an analytical and detail-oriented Information Security Professional, with a proven ability to evaluate and implement security solutions for key business problems.

Tom sees the big picture, integrating strategy and budgeting with project development, implementation and risk management. He is a dedicated troubleshooter, which he leverages in process improvement, systems integration, and work-flow design. Always on the forefront of the latest Information Technology and Security advancements, Tom is skilled in evaluating both current and future technologies to support business initiatives and alleviate risks.

Tom has assisted many companies with compliance objectives by producing value-added results; offering information and opinions as a member of senior management. He directs staff to avoid legal challenges by understanding current and proposed legislation and enforces regulations by recommending new procedures to comply with legal requirements.
